Narcondam Island, Andaman Overview

Located on the western side of the Indian Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Narcondam Island is a very tiny volcanic island which is still inhabited and is lately turning out to be a top tourist destination. Sprawling over a small 6.8 square kilometres, the island’s highest point is 710 m and it is formed of very igneous rock- andesite. It is mostly known for its dormant volcano that exists on the land.

Due to the existence of the volcano on Narcondam Island, it was left deserted and desolate for the longest period of time. But lately a lot of tourists are drawn to the place owing to its untouched and unexploited dense forests, crystal clear waters, uncommercialized beaches and the overall picturesque beauty. Due to the bounteous natural beauty, the place is also inhabited by several birds and boasts of a rich wildlife.

  1. Narcondam Island Wildlife Sanctuary

    Narcondam Island Wildlife Sanctuary was declared a wildlife sanctuary by the government of India mostly to protect the endangered species of Narcondam hornbill. Now it is one of the prime attractions for tourists on the island. These species are believed to originate in the Northeast India. The sanctuary has also been nominated for World Heritage Sites because of its rich flora and fauna and rich vegetation.

    The gorgeous island is also known to be a popular scuba diving destination. It is known for its rich aquatic and marine life that has been enticing swimmers and deep sea divers for a long time now. Considered to be an idyllic scuba diving destination, the most popular diving destinations include rocky ridges and steep slopes like Chimneys, Ooh La La and Lighthouse Reef. You can also spot barrel sponges, gorgonian fans, and soft corals. There are also several desolate bays where you can enjoy a more peaceful dive.

    Narcondam Mountain is the highest peak on the Narcondam Island with a massive height of 710 m and the second highest peak in all of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The vantage point is a trekkers paradise. Besides, the dormant volcano present a beautiful picture with clear blue skies in the backdrop.

    One of the best things that you can do at the island is explore the dense green forests. As already said before, the island is unexplored and therefore it boasts of a rich forest cover. You can trek through the dainty paths lined with trees and shrubs, across quaint streams and gurgling waterfalls.

Best Time to Visit

Generally, any time of the year is considered suitable to visit the island. But in case you want to avoid excessive rainfalls and humidity, you should visit here between September and May. At this time, the weather is comparatively pleasant and cool and devoid of extra high tides.

How to Reach

Narcondam Island can be most easily reached from Diglipur in a ferry. The island is at a distance of 140 km from the city and you will need to book your ferry tickets in advance as they only run once a week.
