History of Zurich

Zurich is a historic Swiss city, with the first settlements in the region dating back to more than 2000 years. It was a tax collection station for the Roman Empire for the first few centuries. After the fall of the empire, the Germans began settling near Zurich, and was taken over by King Louis the German. Zurich first attained the status of an independent city in 1218, after the end of the Zahringer Family. In the 14th century, Zurich acceded to the Swiss Confederacy, taking the Confederacy to a strength of 5 cantons. The Swiss reformation was started in Zurich in Grossmunster Church, and the Roman Catholics fell, as a consequence of which huge changes in the city followed. During the 30 years of war of the 17th century, Zurich did not get involved, and built extensive walls around the city to protect itself. Also, in 1648, Zurich declared itself a republic. After the Helvetic Revolution of 1798, Zurich fell again, and lost a great amount of it's power and privilages. In the 19th century, Zurich slowly consolidated it's position as the federal captial of Switzerland and, with time, grew into the economic and financial global hub it is today.

Mid range trips can go up to CHF 200 - 250, because of more paid attractions and better restaurants. And as luxurious as the city is, going to clubs, shopping, eating at expensive restaurants, your daily budget can be expected to be anything higher than CHF 400.
