Dastgeer Sahib, Srinagar Overview

A Sufi shrine in Khanyar, Srinagar, Dastgeer Sahib is dedicated to Sheikh Syed Abdul Qadir Jelani. The shrine is known for housing the hair strand of hair strand of Abdul Qadir Gilani and the old Quran written by Ali Ibn Abi Talib AS. An architectural wonder, it is believed that the shrine houses five graves within, including that of the revered Sufi saint.

Dating back about 200 years, it was built around 1806 when an Afghan traveller presented the then governor of the state with a relic belonging to Sheikh Syed Abdul Qadir Jelani and then expanded in 1877. This shrine was built in wood and topped off with traditional Khatamband ceilings.On the Urs, which is the death date of the sufi saint, as well as on the birth date, many come here to pray to Allah and for the ziyarat. In 2012, the shrine suffered a major fire though fortunately, the relic, which was kept in a fireproof vault, was safe. One can also visit the bustling market nearby as well as a mosque.
