The Shahid Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium is named as such in dedication to Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh, a landlord from Sonakhan, who led the War of Indian Independence in the region of Chhattisgarh in 1857. The stadium, after going under construction for a period of three years, from 2001 to 2003, was inaugurated on September 11, 2008.

This project undertaken by the Government of Chhattisgarh is currently managed by the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangha. The Shahid Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium has served as a spot for practice matches for the Chhattisgarh cricket team, three seasons of IPL (Indian Premier League) and Ranji Trophy matches among others, and continues to prove its value to the city of Raipur.
