Onsen Hot Pools Retreat & Day Spa, Queenstown Overview

The Onsen Hot Pools Retreat & Day Spa is a quaint facility known for its luxurious services and breathtaking views from within the cedar-lined hot tubs. The facility is located on a cliffside that overlooks the Shotover River Canyon, offering visitors a clear picture of the alpine forests and the water sports on the waters below. The pools are filled with fresh water flowing from the nearby mountains and valleys, completing its quest towards an entirely natural experience for the visitors.

The day spa is located at 160 Arthurs Point Road in Queenstown, at the bottom of Coronet Peak Ski Field. It remains open during all seasons, and the water temperature is regulated daily according to the weather and temperature. The facility also has a reception and sundeck where visitors can spend time with their friends and family in the pools before or after their sessions. Every collection has a size limit of up to 4 adults, and the visitors have the option of bathing in changing in the pool rooms or separate changing rooms.

Timings and Entry Fee

  • The Onsen Hot Pools Retreat & Day Spa remains open from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on all days of the week and is operational throughout the year.
  • The minimum age limit for accessing the pools is 5 years of age, and the spa follows a strict policy wherein children between the ages of 5 and 11 need to be accompanied by at least one adult.
  • Bookings and costs vary according to the choice of packages made by the visitor, since the spa offers tailor-made experiences for its customers. 

Packages and Therapies

  • The Original Onsen Experience package includes basic hot pools facilities for the visitors, wherein one pool can accommodate four adults at a time.
  • The hot pools have retractable picture windows; visitors can opt to switch from outdoors to indoors hot pools at the touch of a button.
  • The session lasts for an hour each and the rates differ during the mornings and evenings.
  • Daytime rates are NZD 75 for one adult, NZD 101 for two adults, NZD 137 for three adults, NZD 162 for four adults and NZD 19.5 for children.
  • Evening rates are $95 for one adult, $125 for two adults, $161 for three adults and $186 for four adults. 
  • The Tandeki package offers snacks to the visitors along with a hot pool session. New Zealand’s local treats and snacks are available along with a complimentary glass of bubbly, beer, wine or juice and a choice of pure ice cream, chocolate bars or crisps.
  • The package also serves the famous Gibbston Valley wines.
  • The ambience is perfectly set with the complimentary aromatherapy burners that are provided during the hot pool session. Daytime rates are NZD 87.50 for one adult, NZD 126 for two adults, NZD 174 for three adults, NZD 212 for four adults and NZD 32.5 for children. Evening rates are NZD 107.5 for one adult, NZD 150 for two adults, NZD 198 for three adults and NZD 236 for four adults.
  • The Ultimate Relaxation Experience package offers massages to visitors along with the hot pools. There are two sessions that can be chosen from in this package - the two-hour session includes 60 minutes in the hot pools with a Tandeki pack along with an hour of massaging and the three-hour session includes an extra hour for a facial along with the provisions listed in the former package. The visitors are given RAW Pressed Refreshments and herbal tea after both the sessions.
  • Bookings for the two-hour package can be made at a rate of NZD 333 for one adult and NZD 432 for two adults, whereas the three-hour package costs NZD 530 for one adult and NZD 599 for two adults.

How To Reach Onsen Hot Pools Retreat & Day Spa

  • The Onsen Hot Pools Retreat & Day Spa lies at a distance of 10 minutes from the main Queenstown centre and at around 20 minutes from Arrowtown.
  • The facility offers a shuttle service for its customers, to and from Queenstown, which can accommodate nine people in one trip. Prior bookings need to be made for availing shuttle services.
  • The hot pools themselves can only be reached by walking up a trail towards the Shotover River, with appropriate signs posted everywhere to direct the visitors. Car parking is available behind ‘The Barn’, and the main facility building is located around 100 meters from the beginning of the trail.
