1. Naritasan Shinshoji Temple

Buddhist Temple

A Shingon temple founded in 940 and one of the most visited in Japan, built around a fire ritual to Fudo Myoo that is performed several times a day in the main hall with drums and burning cedar. You can walk in and watch it free. Commercial Street

An 800 metre approach street sloping down from the temple to the station, lined with wooden shopfronts, pickle sellers, sweet shops and eel restaurants that fillet and grill in the window. Unagi is the genuine local speciality here rather than a tourist invention, and lunchtime queues form. You will walk this street anyway on the way up from the train, so allow time for it.

Garden & Park

Sixteen and a half hectares behind the temple, opened in 1928, with three ponds, a waterfall, a plum grove and a calligraphy museum, and almost nobody in it compared with the halls in front. Free. Plum blossom in February and maples in late November are the two times worth planning around. It reads as a separate place from the temple precinct, which is why it is worth its own hour.

Thirty minutes east, an Edo merchant town of black-tiled storehouses along the Ono canal, with willows on the banks and flat boats running under the bridges. It was home to Ino Tadataka, who walked the entire coast of Japan to make the first accurate map of it, and his house and museum are here. A recreated Edo-period Chiba town of merchant houses, farmhouses and workshops where you can try indigo dyeing, straw work and other crafts rather than only look at them.
