Tannirbhavi Beach, Mangalore Overview

Tannirbhavi Beach is one of the popular beaches in the city. The coastline with golden sand and cool, fresh air is rejuvenating, and people are drawn to the natural beauty of the location. Proper seats and other facilities make the beach a frequently visited attraction, and it is crowded often on weekends and public holidays. Entering the sea is not advisable, but one can try their hand at one of the water sports at the beach. There are lifeguards to keep an eye and rescue in case of an accident, however, visitors are advised to be careful while entering the water. 

The beach only lately gained a lot of popularity with the installation of modern facilities like proper washrooms, parking spaces, lifeguards and several eatery stalls. A couple of concrete benches and sheds have also been installed and tall light masts are placed, for the safety and convenience of the tourists.

Things to do at Tannirbhavi Beach

1. Tannirbhavi Tree Park

The Tannirbhavi Tree Park occupies a large 15-hectare piece of land near the beach. It is protected and maintained by the Forest Department of Karnataka. Several species unique to the Western Ghats of India are found at Tree Park. Some of these have medicinal qualities as well and are extensively used in Ayurveda. The Park also has some sculptures that depict the traditions and the culture of the region.

2. Water Sports

The Tannirbhavi beach is quite famous for water sports. One can choose from Boating, Surfing, Jet Skiing, Motor Boats and Kayaks to explore the beautiful Arabian Sea and the extension of the Malabar Coastline and to satisfy the adventurer inside them.

How To Reach Tannirbhavi Beach

Tannirbhavi Beach is barely 11 kilometres away from the centre of the city. One can take the Bejai - Kavoor Road to reach Tannirbhavi Beach Road via NH 66. Local buses and auto-rickshaws are the best modes of public transport in the city. City bus no. 16 and 16 A from Statebank, Mangalore are direct buses to the beach. 

If taking the Bejai - Kavoor road, head towards Mullakad First Cross Road, take a sharp right at Kuntikana Junction and travel for about half a kilometre. Then turn left onto NH 66 till they see a bridge. Pass the bridge and take a left to get onto Tannirbhavi Beach Road.

Tourists travelling from Sultan Battery can take a ferry ride to cross River Gurupur to reach the beach. From here, one needs to walk through a large area of land covered with trees to reach Tannirbhavi Beach.
