The best time to visit the Maldives is during the dry season from December to April. The dry season is characterised by the bright sun, clear skies, calm sea and only sporadic rainfall at times, thus making it the ideal time for sunbathing, scuba diving and snorkelling. This time tends to be relatively more expensive owing to peak season.

The Maldives with its sun-kissed beaches is a tropical island that witnesses a dry spell, 'Iruvai', between December - April and a wet spell, Hulhangu, from May - November. There is a negligible change in temperature amidst the two seasons.

High Season / Peak Season

December to April is the peak season for tourists in the Maldives. These are the dry months, which means very little or no rainfall. The sea waves remain moderate and are a perfect time for swimming, surfing, and diving. Reef life during this time is vibrant, and the waters are clear, which makes it ideal for underwater activities.

Shoulder Season

May, October, and November see some amount of rainfall, but not so much that it could dampen the spirits of the travellers in these idyllic islands. You could enjoy the sea, the exuberant beach life, and the vibrant night scene as you would have during the peak season. However, while travelling around, you might get stalled due to sudden rains. The stunning underwater world is clearer in the Western islands.

January is one of the most popular months to visit the Maldives. Though there aren?t any festivals specific to the Maldives in January, the new year?s eve on January 1st is celebrated with much pomp in the touristy areas of the Maldives. A celebratory mood persists throughout resorts and clubs in the first weeks of the month.

February

Weather in February
Located in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is an excellent destination all year round. The islands, during February, makes for one of the most pleasant holiday seasons. The sea is lovely during this time, ideal from underwater activities like scuba diving and
snorkelling.
Towards the southeast, may experience short showers, but clear blue skies predominate. During day time the temperature is around 28°C, and it drops only a little at nighttime.

Falling usually on February, Huravee Day celebrates the expulsion of the Malabars from India, an event that occurred in 1752. The day is calculated using the Lunar calendar, and in 2019, Huravee Day falls on February 8.

March

The Maldives are the hottest during March, so it is a good time for those looking forward to wonderful summer beach experience. There is very little chance of rains, and with the sea being wonderfully warm, you can spend a lot of time in the sea. But do make sure to carry enough high factor sun cream and other summer essentials.

April

April is another good time to enjoy the shimmering tropical waters of the Maldives. April is yet another dry month, with average daytime temperatures of 29°C. The winds are calm, and humidity is low. But the temperature doesn't get too cold at night, so it's better that you stay at some air-conditioned place.
However, southwesterly monsoon winds set in by the end of the month, and rainfall is likely in the southern islands. Hence, it is ideal that you choose your place in the islands located in the north. The Matyr's Day observed on the day of Sultan Ali VI falls in April and Maldives commemorate the victory of the brave soldiers.

May

May marks the onset of Monsoon in the Maldives. You?ll encounter rains to a certain degree during this month, especially in the southern islands. However, the showers are short spanned, and you would still have plenty of time to enjoy the sultry sun air in the glorious white sands or take a swim in the sea. The humidity is very high, and so are the UV levels. On sunny days, temperatures could go up to 31ºC.

The Maldives is a Muslim majority country, and the holy month of Ramadan is an important time of the calendar for the locals. A general festive spirit could be seen among the communities of Maldives in May.

June

Even though June is one of the wettest seasons in the Maldives, the showers continue for short durations. Hence, despite it being the monsoons, you could enjoy a lot of sun. During the day, the temperature rises to 30ºC and goes down to a pleasant 26ºC in the evenings. The sea temperature is also lovely, though, too much of sea activities are not suggested during this time. Humidity remains very high.

Kuda Eid, which marks the end of Ramadan, falls in June. It is mostly private, and people celebrate the day with feasts and family gatherings.

July

July is another wettest time in this tropical paradise. Southwesterly monsoon winds are predominant during this time, because of which, less amount of rainfall is seen towards the northern islands.
The average high in temperature goes up to 30ºC in July and drops only to around 25ºC at night. Make sure you take plenty of beach clothes and very few warm clothes. Also, be sure to spend plenty of time in the sea.

The Maldives celebrates Independence Day on 26th and 27th of July. The day is marked by parades, floats and children programs at the country?s capital Male?s Jumhooree Maidan.

August

August falls in the monsoon season at the Maldives, with spells of high humidity and high but short bursts of rainfall. If you are comfortable with high humidity, then it's not a bad time to visit the islands. The sea remains favourable for swimming, though extreme activities are not advised. Plus, accommodation rates also go down during this time.

The average high in the Maldives is 30ºC in August, and the temperature falls to 25ºC in evenings. There is almost 12 hours of sunshine during the month.

September

The temperatures at the Maldives doesn't change much throughout the year. But due to its tropical monsoon climate, a distinct wet season continues from May to October.
Nevertheless, September is an ideal time to visit the islands if your goal is to enjoy the sunny white beach and some swimming activities. While travelling around, you might meet with strong rains, especially in the Southern islands.
The sea remains very warm at 28ºC, while the humidity, as usual, remains high. UV levels will also be extremely high, and sunsets usually occur around 6 PM.

October

October is the last month of the rain spell and an excellent time to visit the islands. The amount of rainfall usually decreases by this month; the tourist influx begins to set in. Hence it is ideal that you book your places and tickets well in advance.
The temperature, as usual, stays at around 30ºC and cools to a balmy 25ºC at night. It is an excellent time to enjoy the sea.

The Maldives celebrate their National Day to commemorate the day Mohammed Thakurufaanu and his army defeated the Portuguese in Male and regained independence in 1578. The day, calculated using the lunar calendar, usually falls in October.

November

November spells the beginning of the dry season. The weather doesn't change throughout the year; the temperature rises to an average of 30ºC, and soothing temperatures around 25ºC is foretold after sundown.
Plenty of sunshine and sea-time is what November promises in the Maldives. Do not make space for warm clothes. Instead, pack a lot of swimwear, beach clothes, and a large suncream tube.
Commodities and food are usually high in the Maldives, so do not expect too many discounts this month.

Festivals in November
On November 3, Maldives celebrates ?Victory Day? - the day in 1988 when the Maldivian government gained victory over the Sri Lankan mercenaries. The day is celebrated by parades, functions and colourful floats. The country celebrates its Republic day on November 11. The birthday of the Prophet Mohammed usually falls in November. It is celebrated by three days of feasting and merriment throughout Maldives.

December

December is lovely and warm in the Maldives, and humidity also remains comfortable. The sea temperatures remain at an average of 28ºC, making it fantastic for swimming, water activities, and sunbathing.
