Combining landscaping and irrigation techniques native to the state, the park also boasts of modern architecture and facilities that are trademarks of the rapid urbanisation of California. The 7.4-acre park in Ocean Avenue was constructed on a parking lot alongside Ken Genser Square, both of which were opened to the public in 2013.

The park is famous for its extensive landscaping, which has earned it the famous American Society of Landscape (ASLA) Professional Award in 2018. The park has around 170 different species of drought-tolerant plants, which highlight the three main ecologies found in California. The highlighted features of the landscape include the rolling hills and gardens, which are typical of the Santa Monica area.

The park is divided into 4 main areas. Discovery Hill is the location of the children’s play area, while the Garden Hill is home to the well maintained display gardens. Observation Hill offers great views of the city of Santa Monica as well as the Pacific Ocean. Visitors will also come across the iconic steel cocoons which act as shaded picnic spots.
