History of the Kanpur Memorial Church

All Souls Cathedral was built in 1875 in the memory of the British soldiers who died during the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny. The church speaks of the massive massacre of Kanpur Barracks and the betrayal of Nana Sahib who after the incident was nicknamed as 'The Butcher of Cawnpore'.

Kanpur Memorial Church Architecture

Designed by Walter Granville an architect of the East Bengal Railway, this red-bricked church is an element of the Lombardic Gothic Style. The church also has a memorial garden on its east corner.

Separated from the main building, the garden also has an intricately carved gothic screen. The centre of the church has a structure of an angel sculpted by Baron Carlo Marchetti, one of Queen Victoria's favourite sculptors. This statue in crossed arms symbolises peace. The church's interiors also house many epitaphs and memorial tablets.
