Truc Lam Giac Tam Zen Monastery

Cai Bau Pagoda, Halong Bay Overview

Cai Bau Pagoda, locally called Truc Lam Giac Tam Zen Monastery, is a stunning coastal temple in Quang Ninh province. The monastery is nestled amid the peaks of Ha Long commune in the Van Don district. Its architecture flaunts typical Vietnamese influences, with its back against the mountains and the front overlooking Bai Tu Long Bay. The upper balconies of the temple offer a panoramic view.

The monastery is two-storied. The upper floor is dedicated to Shakyamuni Buddha, set against a bronze plaque of the Bodhi tree scene. On two sides, the statues of Manjushri and Samantabhadra Bodhisattva symbolize wisdom and compassion. The halls of the main hall narrate Lord Buddha’s life story from birth at Lumbini Gardens to his Nirvana. The bottom floor is run by the Truc Lam Zen sect's resident monks, the only native school of Buddhism in Vietnam started by Emperor Tran Nhan Tong. You should also explore the triple gates, the bell towers, and the gong.

The pagoda was built in 2007 on the ruins of the 700-year-old Phuc Linh Tu Pagoda, which saw many battles during the Mongol invasions. The current temple is built in memory of the Tran Dynasty soldiers who lost their lives in the Battle of Bach Dang. Visitors are allowed to stay overnight and enjoy vegetarian meals free of cost. However, they can give any amount to the donation box at the shrines. A temple’s annual festival is celebrated from February to April, between the first and third months of the lunar year.
