"Tamil Nadu's Ghost Town"

Dhanushkodi Tourism

Dhanushkodi is a small, sparsely populated beach town on the coast of Tamil Nadu. In the 1964, Dhanushkodi was hit by one of the worst storms India has ever seen. Ever since then, Tamil Nadu has rebuilt this town to become one of the most unique and unusual beach towns of India.

This small town redefines the term isolated. Cut off from the rest of the world, this town seems untouched by time. While the rest of India is vying to get ahead in the race for prosperity, this town seems frozen in history, reflecting it grandeur and beauty.

More on Dhanushkodi

Historically, it is considered to be the point from where Lord Ram began the construction of the Ram Sethu. Later, it became a lively, bustling town. It shares the only land border between India and Sri Lanka. After the severe cyclone that hit the coast on 22nd December 1964, the place was declared a ghost town. Houses, transportation, shops, everything was wiped out. There was a massive loss of life. Hardly anybody lives there now. The eerily beautiful ruins attract tourists throughout the year.

Eating Options in Dhanushkodi are very limited. Except for a few beach shacks and snack vendors, finding proper restaurants might become difficult. You can however easily travel to the nearby city of Rameshwaram. It is full of eating places, including multi cuisine dining options.

It is best to stay in Rameshwaram and make a day trip Dhanushkodi as there aren't any options for staying in Dhanushkodi.
One day plan - Reach Dhanushkodi by morning. Visit the beaches and if possible, hitch a ride on a fishing boat. Check out the remains of the old church near the seashore. Then, visit the mesmerising Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park. In the evening, check out the old Dhanushkodi railway station before winding up the trip.

- Being prone to frequent mild storms, the weather is quite unpredictable. So make sure you're carrying rain coats, umbrellas and common medicines.
