Leh-Manali Highway Rohtang Tunnel to Operate Soon!

The construction of the 8.8 kilometre Rohtang Tunnel is set to wrap up soon. An informed spokesperson has revealed that efforts are being made to complete the project by May 2020. On completion, it is said to be the longest road tunnel in India.

Project Benefits

Rohtang Tunnel
The tunnel is being built at an elevation of 10171 ft under the Rohtang Pass. The project is set to cut short the distance between Keylong and Manali by 45 kilometres, thus, speeding up transport. It will also facilitate an open route for traffic along the Leh-Manali Highway during winters, thus giving a free-way to Himachal citizens between Lahaul-Spiti to Ladakh.

Union Minister's Plea

The informed personnel has also revealed that the Union Minister Rajnath Singh has extended a request to Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur to accelerate the construction of the Rohtang Tunnel for the convenience of Lahaul-Spiti commutation. Further on, he has also urged him to improve the appalling road conditions.

The prime purpose of the tunnel is to ease travel during the snowfall months since Rohtang Pass functions for only 5 months (between May and November) in a year due to the extreme weather conditions.
