Cloudburst in Himachal, Roads to Kinnaur Blocked

The rains in Himachal Pradesh have caused great destruction. Due to cloudburst and floods at more than three places in Kinnaur district, electricity from 4 hydropower projects has halted 3212 MW power generation. National Highway 5 is blocked at two places and the Tangling Bridge connecting Purnee has also been washed away. A pickup was also swept away due to flooding in a place called Kanam.

Today hydropower projects had to be closed due to the flood situation created after the cloudburst in Kanam, Moorung Nalla, Tangling and Tongtongche Nalla of Sangla Valley in the upscale Kinnaur district.  Due to excess silt in the Sutlej River, power generation has been stopped from the Karcham Wangtoo of 1,000 MW, 300 MW Baspa Phase Two in the Baspa River, the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri in the Sutlej River and the 412 MW Rampur Hydro Project. Due to the high silts, the gates of Karcham and Nathpa dam have been opened.

The water level of the Sutlej river increased

The water level of the Sutlej river has increased.  The administration has advised people not to go to the Sutlej coast as a precaution and people living in the coastal area have been asked to remain vigilant.

Spiti and Caja Routes Closed

The National Highway is blocked between Spilo and Kinso Khad in Kinnaur. The water level has increased in Ribba Nala and Rung Nala. Rainfall continues in the upper region. In some places, apple orchards of the owners have also been damaged due to floods.  However, the situation is under control. Kinnaur and Rampur police officers have asked the people of the riverbank to take precautions. The process of rain will continue in Himachal Pradesh till August 14. There is a possibility of heavy rains in the state from 12 to 14 August.
