Indore City Reclaims Its Tag of India’s Cleanest City for the Fourth Time!

As per the recently announced results the 'Cleanliness Survey' conducted bu the central government across India, the city of Indore again bagged the first position consecutively fourth times in a row. A total of 4,372 cities participated in the survey, including municipal areas with a population ranging from 25,000 to over 10 Lakh.

Other Cities in the Run

Further, Bhopal grabbed the second spot during the first quarter (i.e. April to June), while Rajkot city in Gujarat was ranked 2nd during the second quarter (i.e. July to September). Surat city grabbed the third position in the first quarter of the previous year while Navi Mumbai was ranked third on the list during the second quarter. While Indore grabbed the first rank during both the quarters, Kolkata performed worse than expected.

Bihar’s Sursand (Sitamarhi) and Harnaut (Nalanda) were on the bottom of the list during the first quarter and so were Kurdermukh in Karnataka and Bedangpet in Telangana during the second quarter.

Objective Behind Swachh Survekshan League

The rankings were published as part of a survey report released by Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. This was the first time that 'Swatchh Survekshan League' was organised in India. It was conducted in 3 quarters, i.e. from April to June, July to September and October to December. Instead of going for an Annual Cleanliness Survey, the primary objective behind the conduction of the League was to ensure that regular steps are undertaken by Municipal Authorities to improve the sanitation and hygiene facilities in the country. This will help in the constant monitoring of service level performance in the local urban bodies.

Urban Affairs Minister also said that as more and more cities and towns participate in the Swachhta rankings, it is clear that people are taking the league seriously. Urban areas are making efforts to secure the top positions in the list.
