The Mara is the easiest first safari to book from India and it delivers big cats more reliably than almost anywhere else. Lion, cheetah and leopard sightings are close to routine on the open grassland, and the wildebeest herds cross over from the Serengeti roughly July to October. Nairobi is a direct overnight flight from Mumbai or Delhi, and three or four nights here works on its own. Kenya packages average around Rs 2,37,000 per person.

The Serengeti holds the migration for most of the year, so the question is which month rather than whether you will see it. The herds calve in the southern plains and Ndutu around January and February, move west and north through the middle of the year, and reach the Kenyan border by about July. It pairs naturally with Ngorongoro on the northern circuit. Expect it to cost a little more than the same number of nights in the Mara, mostly because of park fees and internal flights.

This is water-based game viewing rather than a road safari. You move by mokoro, a shallow dugout canoe poled through the reed channels, plus small boats and walking, with light aircraft hops between camps. Wild dog, red lechwe and elephant are the signature sightings. Botswana runs a deliberate low-volume, high-price model, so budget well above Kenya or Tanzania for the same number of nights.

Kruger is the one big African park you can drive yourself. Tarred roads, marked routes and rest camps with self-catering huts and fuel stations make it the cheapest way to see the Big Five without a guide, and guided drives are there if you would rather not. It suits families and anyone nervous about a first safari.

Ngorongoro is a conservation area rather than a national park, which is why Maasai herders still graze cattle alongside the wildlife. The draw is the crater floor, a caldera of about 260 sq km holding lion, elephant, buffalo and one of the better chances of seeing black rhino. One full day inside is usually enough, and it sits between Arusha and the Serengeti.

Gorilla trekking is a different trip from a game drive. You walk uphill through thick forest for anything from one to six hours behind a tracker, then get one hour with a habituated family. Permits are capped and sell out months ahead, so book that before anything else. The permit is also the biggest single cost of the trip, well above what game drives elsewhere on this list add up to.

South Luangwa is where the walking safari started and it is still the best place to do one. You set out at first light with a guide and an armed scout, reading tracks rather than driving to sightings, which changes the pace completely. Leopard density along the Luangwa River is exceptional. Getting here means a connection through Lusaka or Johannesburg and then a bush flight.

Sabi Sands is a cluster of private reserves on Kruger's western boundary, not part of the park itself. The fence between them came down in the early 1990s so the animals move freely, but the rules differ: lodges here drive off-road and after dark, which is why the leopard viewing is so good. Rates are all-inclusive and firmly luxury.

Chobe is best seen from the water. An afternoon boat cruise on the Chobe River puts you level with elephant herds coming down to drink, along with hippo, buffalo and crocodile, and it needs no long drives. Botswana's first national park is an hour from Victoria Falls, so most people do the two together. A good short taste of a big-game river system.

Amboseli is the elephant park, and the reason photographers keep going back is Kilimanjaro standing behind the herds on a clear morning. The mountain is often lost in cloud after mid-morning, so plan early starts. It is a short flight or a four to five hour drive from Nairobi and works well as two nights added to the Mara.

Etosha works the other way round from most parks. Instead of driving to find animals you park at a waterhole and let them come to you, which they do in numbers from May to October. The roads are good enough for a normal hire car, so self-drive is realistic, and several rest camps have floodlit waterholes you can sit at after dark.

Rwanda is the gorilla option for people short on time. Kigali is a two hour drive from the park gate, so a trek fits into three or four days rather than the week Uganda usually needs. The trade-off is cost, since Rwanda prices its permits at the top of the market. Golden monkey trekking is the standard second day.

Addo sits outside the malaria zone, which is the main reason families with young children choose it. You can drive yourself through it in a normal hire car, the elephant viewing is dependable, and it is 45 minutes from Gqeberha airport, so it fits neatly onto a Garden Route trip rather than needing its own week.

Pilanesberg sits in an old volcanic crater two and a half hours from Johannesburg and is outside the malaria zone, which makes it the practical family choice. You can self-drive it in a day, or stay over and take lodge drives. Madikwe, further north on the Botswana border, is the same idea done at a higher price with better big-cat odds.

Mana Pools is one of the few parks where you are allowed to walk without a guide, which draws experienced safari-goers rather than first-timers. Canoe trips down the Zambezi channels put you level with elephant and hippo. The floodplain forest is what gives it that open, high-ceilinged look you see in wildlife photography. The season is short, roughly May to October.

Queen Elizabeth combines a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, which is thick with hippo and birds, with chimpanzee tracking in the Kyambura Gorge. The Ishasha sector in the south is known for lions that rest up in fig trees. Most people add it to a gorilla trip rather than travelling for it on its own.

The northern part of Selous Game Reserve became Nyerere National Park in 2019, so you will see both names on older itineraries. This is Tanzania's southern circuit: boat safaris on the Rufiji River, walking safaris and far fewer vehicles than the Serengeti. Worth it as a second Tanzania trip, or a first one if crowds put you off.

Hwange has Zimbabwe's largest elephant population and pumped waterholes that pull game in through the dry months. It is a two hour drive from Victoria Falls, so it is easy to add on, and it costs less than Botswana for a similar landscape. Self-drive is possible but most visitors use a camp vehicle.

Moremi is the drivable part of the Okavango, covering the eastern side of the delta where floodplain meets dry woodland. That mix is why it holds one of Africa's better wild dog populations along with lion and leopard. Overland and camping trips run in from Maun, which makes it the more affordable way into the delta.

Lower Zambezi is canoe country. You paddle the side channels past elephant crossing between islands, and the camps look straight out onto the river, so game viewing carries on from your deck. It faces Mana Pools across the water, so the wildlife is the same. Access is by boat or light aircraft from Lusaka, which is what pushes the cost up.

This is the desert half of a Namibian trip rather than a game park. The red dunes at Sossusvlei and the bleached dead trees at Deadvlei are what most people come for, and the wildlife is oryx, springbok and ostrich rather than big cats. Climb Dune 45 or Big Daddy at sunrise. Most itineraries pair it with Etosha and drive between the two.

Damaraland is where you go looking for desert-adapted elephant and black rhino, animals that range across dry riverbeds instead of living near waterholes. Sightings take effort and are never promised, which is exactly the appeal for some travellers. The rock engravings at Twyfelfontein and the Brandberg massif are close by.

Tsavo is huge, quiet and close to the coast, so it is the usual safari add-on for anyone already booked into Mombasa or Diani. The elephants look red because they dust themselves in the local soil. Tsavo West has the Mzima Springs hippo hide, while Tsavo East has open plains and easier spotting. Two nights is enough.
