As of January 2024, Kenya has made it visa-free for people from all around the globe to visit. However, everyone, including kids and infants, must get an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before visiting Kenya.

The Kenya eTA, similar to an e-visa, is a semi-automated system for assessing visitors' eligibility to travel to Kenya. Unlike traditional visa processes, it doesn't entail an embassy interview. Instead, applicants provide biographic details and answer eligibility queries online. While the eTA is government-approved, it doesn't grant entry; immigration officers decide upon arrival.

When applying, you'll need to furnish personal data and answer eligibility questions. It's crucial to apply at least 3 days before travel for proper authorization, with applications accepted up to 3 months beforehand. However, for enough time to process, it's best to submit applications at least 2 weeks before travelling. It's advisable to apply soon after booking accommodations and transportation.

Process for Applying for Kenya eTA

To apply for a Kenya eTA:
  • Visit www.etakenya.go.ke.
  • Click "Apply Now" and follow the steps.
  • Review all entered information for accuracy.
  • Submit your application.
  • Receive an email confirming receipt.
  • If applicable, receive another email confirming payment.
  • Wait for approval or refusal from Immigration.
  • If approved, print or download the PDF or use the "Kenya Travel Authorisation" app.
  • If denied, contact [email protected].
  • Check your application status on the official website anytime.

  • A valid passport with at least six months left and a blank page.
  • A recent passport photo or selfie for the application.
  • Contact details (home address, phone, email).
  • Travel information including flight details (arrival flight number, initial departure date for connecting flights).
  • Proof of hotel booking (or an invitation letter if staying with friends).
  • Credit/debit card details for payment, if required.

Must-Know about Kenya eTA

  • The processing time for the eTA is three working days.
  • The fee for the eTA is $32.50 per traveler plus bank and processing fees.
  • The eTA is valid for 90 days after issuance.
  • You can only apply for the eTA after arranging your transportation and accommodation.
  • The application for children under 18 must be completed by their legal guardian, parent, or accompanying adult. It's advisable for families to apply together as a group.
  • If you frequently travel to Kenya or have multiple upcoming trips, you should consider downloading the "Kenya Travel Authorization" mobile app, which is available starting in January. This app allows you to securely store your travel documents and profile on your phone for future reference.

Countries Exempt from eTA Requirement

The eTA is required for all foreign visitors. However, passport holders from the following EAC countries do not need to apply for an eTA: Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The Kenya visa-free policy has made visiting the country easier. With the Kenya eTA, travellers can submit all required information online before their trip, giving them peace of mind about meeting Kenya's travel requirements.
