What is the best time to visit Sigiriya?

January to September is the best time to visit Sigiriya. Sigiriya sits in Sri Lanka's dry zone, so it stays dry and climbable right through the months when the southwest monsoon is soaking Colombo and Galle.

January to March is the most comfortable stretch, warm and dry with clear mornings. June to September is hotter but just as dry, and it is the only window for the elephant gathering at nearby Minneriya.

October to December is the wet season here, the opposite of the coasts. Storms build through the afternoon and cloud can hide the view from the summit, so start early if you are travelling then.

Whichever month you pick, be at the gate for the 7 AM opening. There is no shade on the staircase and the narrow upper section backs up by mid-morning.

Dry Season: January to September

January to September is the reliable window. Sigiriya is in the dry zone, so the southwest monsoon that shuts down the beaches barely reaches it.

January to March is the pick for comfort. May to September is hot and dusty but the skies are clear and the rock photographs at its best.

Wet Season: October to December

October to December is the wet stretch here, the reverse of the coastal pattern. Afternoon storms make the summit steps slippery and low cloud can wipe out the view, so climb in the morning and keep a spare day in hand.

Best Time of Day to Climb Sigiriya

Be at the gate when it opens at 7 AM. There is no shade anywhere on the staircase and the narrow upper section backs up by mid-morning, so an early start saves you both the heat and the queue.

Late afternoon is the cooler alternative with softer light, but last entry is around 5 PM. Avoid weekends and public holidays either way.

Minneriya and the Elephant Gathering

June to September is when the elephants gather at Minneriya. The dry season shrinks the reservoir and herds come down to the grass at its edge, at their biggest in August and September.

Minneriya is under an hour from Sigiriya, so an early climb and a late-afternoon safari fit comfortably into one day.
