1. Odori Park

Garden & Park

A kilometre and a half of green splitting the city centre in two, and the axis you orient yourself by rather than a destination in itself. Free and always open. It matters most in February, when it becomes the main site of the Snow Festival, and in summer when the beer gardens set up along it. The TV Tower at the eastern end is the paid part.

Fairs & Festivals

A week in February when several hundred snow and ice sculptures fill Odori Park, some of them several storeys high, drawing over two million people. The 2027 festival runs from the fourth to the eleventh of February. It is free. Odori's illuminations switch off at ten, and the ice sculpture site nearby runs an hour later.

Viewpoint

A 531-metre peak on the city's southwestern edge with what is counted among Japan's three great night views. Budget properly: the ropeway is fourteen hundred yen return and a separate mini cable car for the last stretch to the summit is another seven hundred, so it is around two thousand one hundred all in. It opens late morning and runs to ten.

Historical Site

The 1888 red brick neo-baroque building that is the best Meiji-era photograph in Sapporo. It reopened in July 2025 after roughly six years closed for renovation, so a great deal of what you will read online is out of date, including the claim that it is free to enter. There is now a three hundred yen charge for the interior, plus a shop and a restaurant.

5. Sapporo TV Tower

Observation Deck

A 147-metre tower at the eastern end of Odori Park with a deck at ninety metres, and the only place you see the park's full length running away from you in a straight line, which is the shot people come for in February. Twelve hundred yen, or seventeen hundred for a day-and-night ticket good for re-entry within three days. Open until ten.

Museum

Japan's only beer museum, in an 1890 brick malt house, and entry is free, which surprises people. The guided tour costs a thousand yen and is in Japanese only. The real draw is next door: the beer garden serves Genghis Khan, grilled mutton at your table, which is also one of the few Hokkaido specialities that is neither seafood nor pork.

7. Day Trip to Otaru

Day Trip

A canal town half an hour up the coast by rapid train, eight hundred yen each way, and a half day rather than a full one. The 1920s warehouses along the canal are the thing, though the walk itself is short; Sakaimachi Street behind it is pleasant but heavily commercialised. If you are here in February, the Snow Light Path lines the canal with candles.

Garden & Park

Isamu Noguchi designed this as one continuous land sculpture on a former waste site: a 62-metre man-made mountain, a glass pyramid, geometric hills and a fountain. Free and never closed, though the west and south gates shut from mid-November to mid-April. It photographs better than anything else in Sapporo and most visitors never hear of it.

Temple

Hokkaido's principal shrine, set in the woods of Maruyama Park, and the pairing is the city's main cherry blossom spot. The timing is the useful part for anyone planning a trip around blossom: Hokkaido flowers in early May, several weeks after Tokyo and Kyoto, so this is where you go if you arrive too late for the rest of the country.

Nightlife

The largest nightlife district north of Tokyo, and for anyone not drinking the real reason to come is Ramen Yokocho, a narrow alley of miso ramen counters. Miso ramen was invented in this city and is the thing to order. The district also carries a red-light trade and street touts offering free drinks, which is the standard trap; walk past them.

Amusement & Theme Park

The Ishiya chocolate factory dressed as a mock-European courtyard, and a strong stop with children. Worth knowing before you buy: the shop, cafe and courtyard are free, and the eight hundred yen ticket only covers the factory zone, so plenty of visitors never need it. Cookie-making workshops have to be booked ahead.

Historical Site

An 1878 wooden drill hall from the agricultural college, and honestly a five-minute stop rather than a highlight: it is a modest two-storey building now hemmed in by office blocks, and it appears regularly on lists of Japan's most disappointing sights. Three hundred and fifty yen. It closes only for the first three days of January.
