Stretching out for over almost 23 kilometers, and some more to the north of Queenstown, Skippers Canyon is regarded to be a very central scenic location for vacationing around Queenstown. The famous canyon looks over the Shotover River, globally famous to be a rich mining center and a hub for adventure tourism. Standing over the edge of the canyon will give you goosebumps given how steep it could get at some points.
The road area of the canyon is made primarily to make tourist transportation easy and comfortable. The preferable route would be through the Gorge road to the Coronets peak since this route lets you look over other two scenic sites, Wakatipu Basin and the Shotover River. The trip is best enjoyed by taking a 4WD car or minibus. A varied range of photographic locations, good food, comfortable and luxurious accommodation available promises the trip to Skippers Canyon an unforgettable one.
Skippers Canyon, surrounded over the Shotover River is regarded to be a very rich mine source for gold. The river was named by William Gilbert, one of the first Europeans in origin to settle in the mainland of Queenstown.
Skippers Canyon is also known to have introduced hydroelectricity for gold mining purposes in the year 1882. Twenty years before that, there was a report of having found gold in the spot very unexpectedly by two miners. Soon after, it became a hub for other miners across the world who came to try their luck.
