Musee Jacquemart-Andre, Paris Overview

A private museum built in the 19th century, Musee Jacquemart-Andre holds a delightful collection of artworks amassed by the couple - Edouard Andre and Nelie Jacquemart. After Andre’s death, Jacquemart prepared their house, built by Henri Parent from 1869-1975, to be entrusted to the Institut de France as a museum.

The major artists’ whose works form a part of the 29 masterpieces held at this museum are - Jean-Marc Nattier, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Sandro Botticelli and others. The museum carries with it a personal, homely vibe as it also provides a look into the 19th-century lifestyle as proposed by the architecture - winding staircases, winter gardens, antechamber joining separate rooms of the couple, formal staterooms, informal quarters like the library and so on.

Architecture and Style of Musee Jacquemart-Andre

The mansion is divided into five major segments namely The State Apartments, The Informal Quarters, The Winter Garden and Staircase, The Italian Museum and the Private Apartments, all of which are based upon Haussmann style of architecture, which is dominated by stone elements, and the facade is the most crucial element of this architecture. Each section of these segments is tastefully decorated, spreading their collection across the house, keeping in mind aspects such as colour coordination, alignment cues, thematic presentation to create a spacious yet sufficiently occupied aura. History of Musee Jacquemart-Andre

Edouard Andre and his wife, a famous portrait painter, travelled all across Europe and the Orient to acquire and collect the best and rarest works of furniture and art. The pieces collected by them are some of the most remarkable ones in France, especially the variety of art that is showcased. Works from German and Flemish schools, detached frescoes, sculptures, refined items of furniture and tapestries, along with interior decorations and instruments. Even the Renaissance period in Florence and Venice is vividly displayed in the first floor of the Italian Museum.

Edouard Andre had a considerable inherited fortune, which he devoted towards buying these artworks, and also had a mansion built, to exhibit them. After his death, his wife, Nellie Jacquemart, completed the collection by adding more pieces of art. She then bequeathed the collection along with the mansion to the Institut de France as a museum, and it became open to the public in 1913.
