The Museum at FIT, New York City Overview

The Museum at FIT is part of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in Manhattan, New York and was initially started as the Design Laboratory for the university. Over time as its collection of clothing, textiles and accessories grew, it was decided to turn it into a museum to entice interest amongst the general public about fashion. With a collection of over 50,000 garments and accessories dating from the 18th century till present, the Museum at FIT specializes in showcasing contemporary fashion as well as historically significant clothing and accessories. Their impressive collection means that the museum frequently rotates its exhibits and visitors can make multiple visits to the museum and be rewarded with new exhibits each time.

Out of the three viewing galleries, one is permanently reserved for showcasing faculty and student projects which gives the museum an added medium to interact with visitors. Its ever expanding collection spanning more than 250 years of fashion, coupled with the fact that the museum is free to visit, makes it one of the hidden gems of New York city’s museum trail.
