Rubin Museum of Art, New York City Overview

The Rubin Museum, originally founded by the Rubin family to exhibit their sizable collection of Himalayan artefacts, was later expanded to include historical artifacts and art from the Himalayan, Eurasian and Indian Subcontinent regions.

A testament to the rich history of the region can be seen in the fact that pieces on display in this museum range from the 2nd Century till the 18th Century, covering more than 1500 years of East Asian history. Despite having a permanent installation displaying Tibetian art and artefacts, the Rubin Museum holds exhibitions that explore a wide range of religious and cultural aspects of the Himalayan and Central Asian regions. They also hold interactions, workshops and art performances in the museum as well as promote cinema from the region by organizing movie premiers in their inhouse theater. Like many modern museums, the Rubin museum is constantly exploring ways to be more accessible to the differently abled, and in this regard offer sign language and touch tours on a regular basis as well as separate visiting hours for the elderly and high risk visitors.
