Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, New York City Overview

The museum of Jewish heritage in Manhattan, New York City was opened in 1997 and focuses on Jewish life and culture in the 20th and 21st centuries through the lense of the Holocaust, and the effect it had on the Jewish community. The museum features an incredible variety of mediums and perspectives, from regular everyday objects belonging to holocaust survivors, like drawings and diaries, to the Garden of Stones, a permanent installation of trees planted into stones by artists and families of those that perished under the Nazi Rule.

The garden is a constantly evolving space for reflection and contemplation. There is also a theatre on the premises which screens relevant films and hosts panel discussions throughout the year. In keeping with the museum’s objective to immerse visitors into Jewish culture, it permanently hosts the National Yiddish Theatre Company which performs Yiddish plays and is equipped to translate Yiddish to English in real time for non Yiddish speakers. The museum of Jewish Heritage’s vast collection of over 40,000 artifacts promises to keep visitors engrossed and offers a hard hitting glimpse into the horrors of the holocaust and the perseverence of Jewish culture and traditions during it.
