Giraffe Centre, Nairobi Overview

The Giraffe Centre in Nairobi is an environmental conservation centre dedicated to protecting the endangered Rothschild's giraffe. A visit to the Giraffe Centre not only allows you to get up close and personal with Africa's tallest mammal but also directly supports the conservation efforts for these majestic creatures.

At the Giraffe Centre, you can feed and watch giraffes from a special raised platform built to their height. While you're there, you might also see warthogs searching for food. After your giraffe encounter, you can unwind at the tea house or pick up souvenirs at the Daisy Souvenir Shop. It's important to know that most of the money to run the centre comes from entrance fees, the shop, and the tea house, so your visit directly helps support the conservation of these amazing animals.

History of Giraffe Centre

The Giraffe Centre was started in 1979 by Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville, who were worried about the decline of the Rothschild Giraffe population in Kenya. They brought two giraffes, Daisy and Marlon, to their home in Nairobi and began breeding them. With support from the Africa Fund for Endangered Wildlife (A.F.E.W.) in the United States, they moved more giraffes to safe areas across Kenya, like national parks and reserves.

In 1983, the Giraffe Centre opened an Educational Centre to teach people about giraffes and conservation. Now, over 300 Rothschild Giraffes are living in Kenyan parks, thanks to the efforts of the Giraffe Centre and its partners.
