Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Art Museum, Naha Overview
Okinawa spent most of its history as the Ryukyu Kingdom, trading with China and Southeast Asia, and became a Japanese prefecture only in 1879. This is the one place that lays that out properly, with natural history alongside it and a separate wing of contemporary Okinawan art. Worth doing early in a trip, because it changes how everything else on the island reads.
