Balsamand Lake, Jodhpur Overview

Famous for being the site of the Bal Samand Lake Palace, a heritage hotel, Balsamand Lake was built way back in the 12th century. Located just 5km away from Jodhpur, it is a world away from the crowds and hustle of the city. The lake was created in 1159 AD by the Gurjara-Pratihara rulers to save the city of Jodhpur from droughts. The Maharaja Sur Singh, who was the creator of this artificial lake, was honoured by the title of Sawai Raja in turn for his impeccable services. Surrounded by lush gardens, it contains a large variety of trees like mango, papaya, pomegranate, etc. Balsamand Palace, built in the 17th century on the lake, is a red sandstone architectural marvel which overlooks the lake.

The mesmerising lake was made famous by its adjoining estate is the summer home of the Jodhpur Maharajas. Not only does it offer a luxurious stay experience it also presents an idyllic location to enjoy sunset views and lakeside picnics. You can have long walks beside its water or have dinner as you sit at Balsamand Palace's restaurant witnessing beautiful lake views. The entry to the lake is free of cost, however, getting to the gardens may cost a little, depending upon the season.

If it is a treat of the tastebuds and the eyes that you are looking for, Balsamand Lake Restaurant is the place to be at. A meal here wills et you back by INR 2500 but every penny spent is worth it. Former palace turned into a Heritage hotel, the Balsamand Lake Palace offers excellent amenities and a comfortable, authentic Rajasthani experience like no other. The Palace hotel has two wings, with suites and garden rooms. However, only one suite, the Maharani suite has a lake view. Walking around the Garden- This beautiful lake is encircled with gardens that boast all sorts of trees, some of which include mango, pomegranate, lime, plum, papaya, and banana. The water from the reservoir reaches the gardens through a beautiful waterfall, which is a must-see spectacle. Sightings of peacocks, blue bulls, jackals and hundreds of fruit bats in the trees are also known to occur. The lake is surrounded by a promenade as well, which is ideal for casual, or evening walks with a one of a kind view.

Village Safari and Horse Riding- 
The hotel offers horse riding, village safari and dune experience, marking this spot as a different, extraordinary holiday spot.

Some Handicrafts Shopping- 
Situated nearby are huge bazaars where you can go for handicrafts shopping. The colourful markets will surely leave you in awe. 

Maha Mandir- 
It is located at a distance of 3km from the Balsamand Lake. The temple is famous for its marvellous architecture. Built in 1812, it has 84 pillars ornated with carvings and frescos depicting several postures of yoga, intricate motifs, and other sorts of artworks. Moreover, its beautifully designed royal hall is used for peaceful yoga classes.
Maha Mandir remains open on all days from 5:00 AM - 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM - 9:00 PM.

Best Time To Visit Balsamand Lake

The ideal time to visit Balsamand Lake is during the evening as it won't be too hot, and not too dark as well. The lake looks spectacular as the dipping sun rays light it up.

Tips For Visiting Balsamand Lake

1. Book in advance for the hotel, preferably in the off seasons of January, February, March, August, September and November.
2. Pack a picnic with food and games to enjoy the lake to its fullest.
3. For all the horse riders, there is an official stable in the hotel, so get your gear!

How To Reach Balsamand Lake

The most comfortable way of travelling to Balsamand Lake is booking a cab beforehand or organising a transport vehicle with the hotel you are staying at. While travelling from the airport, you must reach NH 65, from where, after taking a left on the NH 114 you will reach your destination. Local buses are also available for your ease.
