Dian Al-Mahri Mosque, Jakarta Overview

Dian Al-Mahri Mosque is better known as the Golden Dome Mosque, located in West Java. The mosque complex is a fusion of Arabic, Persian and Indian architectures, hence attracting scores of tourists here to witness the unique blend and learn more about the fascinating heritage of the place. Its dazzling domes have been compared to that of the Taj Mahal in India, making it a popular tourist destination.

While there are five significant 24 carat gold plated domes on the outside, the Dian Al-Mahri Mosque has a lavish interior with magnificent chandeliers which were imported directly from Italy. The floor marbles and granite stones used in the towers are imported from Turkey and Italy. The sculpture above Imam's residence is made of 18 carats of gold and the crown pillars of the mosque constitute 168 pieces of layered gold residue.

The second floor’s fence and the mosque’s ceiling have decorative calligraphy and the walls are coloured with warm and calming colours. The mosque covers a huge private area of 50 hectares which includes the surrounding palm trees, gardens and fountains. The mosque building itself can accommodate 20,000 people at once while the inner courtyard can accommodate 8,000 worshipers.

History

Covering an area of 50 hectares, Dian Al-Mahri Mosque in present time, is considered one of the largest mosques in Southeast Asia. However Dian Al-Mahri isn’t a very old mosque, the land on which it stands was bought in the year 1996 by a businessman from Baten named Hj. Dian Djuriah Maimun Al Rasyid. The construction of the mosque started in the year 2001 and the mosque was finally open for public in 2006. It was opened on 31 December 2006, which was the second Eid-Al-Adha of the year.

The mosque was designed by architect Uke Setiawan and financed by businesswoman Dian Djuriah Maimun Al Rasyid and her husband Maimun Al Rasyid. The architecture has elements of Indian and Persian style and the five domes were meant to represent the Islamic Pillars. The beautiful architecture, the magnificent ground area, the gold plated domes and the lavish interiors made Dian Al-Mahri one of the most famous places of worship and tourism in greater Jakarta over the years.
