Mesjid Istiqlal is a famous mosque in Jakarta. The mosque is so huge that it can accommodate as many as 120,000 people making it the biggest mosque in South East Asia. The mosque is an architectural delight, and resonates peace when one goes inside. It serves as the praying place for the muslims of the country but it is visited by everyone from all walks of life.
Mesjid Istiqlal, also known as The Grand Istiqlal Mosque of Jakarta, was built to commemorate the Independence of Indonesia. ‘Istiqlal’ is the Indonesian term for independence. The mosque was opened to the public by the first Indonesian president in 1978. Over the course of its long and prominent history, Mesjid Istiqlal has been visited by eminent personalities like then US President and First Lady Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, former US President Bill Clinton and Prince Charles of the United Kingdom.
