FAQs on Beaches near Jakarta

Are there beaches in Jakarta?

One, at Ancol on the north coast, which is a managed recreation park rather than a natural beach and sits on murky bay water. Everything else on this list is outside the city.

Which beach near Jakarta is best?

The Thousand Islands, ninety minutes by fast boat from Ancol, for clear water and actual sand. On the mainland, Anyer and Carita in Banten are the usual weekend escape, about three hours by road.

How long is the drive to Anyer?

Roughly three hours in normal traffic and considerably more at weekends, when Jakarta heads west en masse. Leaving before six in the morning makes a real difference.

Is the water clean?

Not at Ancol, which sits in Jakarta Bay. It improves markedly the further west and further offshore you go, and the Thousand Islands and Peucang are genuinely clear.

What about Sawarna and the south coast?

Sawarna on the Indian Ocean side has the most dramatic scenery and the best surf, but it is five to six hours away over poor roads and the currents are dangerous. Treat it as an overnight, not a day trip.
