Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad Overview

With over 1500 species finding habitat here, the Nehru Zoological Park is one of the most loved attractions in the city. Neighbouring the Mir Alam tank, it is also known as Hyderabad Zoo. The massive enclosure plays host to Indian Rhino, Asiatic Lion, Bengal Tiger, Indian Elephant as well as panthers, pythons, deer, and antelopes. Given the proximity to the tank, a number of migratory birds can also be spotted here. It is among the largest zoos in India at 380 Acres and is popular among visitors as the animals here have been kept in enclosures that resemble their natural habitat.

Once inside, the zoological park offers a number of safaris including Lion, Tiger, and Bear Safaris. For kids, there are many fun activities and enclosures like the Dinosaur Park visit, Mini train ride and elephant rides. The zoo also has a museum detailing its natural history. Migratory birds are known to arrive every year to the Mir Alam tank lake and its embankment, making it their home for a few months and adding to the biological diversity of the place.

Facilities offered at Nehru Zoological Park

1. Toy train: This is a joyous ride for all children and saves you the effort of walking.
2. Food courts: There is a multi- cuisine food court just beside train station, a rhino canteen near Rhino enclosure where they offer snacks, cool drinks, tea & coffee, a Vijaya Dairy Parlor by the Giraffe enclosure that offer Dairy products and a Maharaja Canteen by the Parrot World that offers Food & Bakery items.
3. Battery operated car: Like any other zoo or national park, there are battery operated cars to take you through the park.
4. Bicycles: Bicycles can be hired from the park for INR 20 per person and it can be fun riding it through the park with your friends and family.
5. Childen's Park: As the name suggests, this is a park for children with a number of swings and slides for them to enjoy.
6. Butterfly Park: Nehru Zoo is the first zoo in India to start an open Butterfly Park in 1998. There are many different and exotic plants to attract the butterflies and the park is a home to several species of butterflies.
7. Jurassic park: This enclosure has life-size models of Brontosaurs, Stegosaurus, Triceratops and Tyrannosaurs are displayed with information panels to educate the visitors about each one of them
8. Aquarium: here are large fish tanks and many different aquatic species from both fresh and marine water. 
9. Museum: There is a museum here which explains animal and human evolution.
10. Boating: For people who love skimming through the water, a boating session is also in place here.

Experiences at Nehru Zoological Park

Get up close and personal with the wild as you indulge in the many safari rides on offer in the Hyderabad Zoo. You can learn more about lions at the Lion Safari, or acquaint yourself with India's national animal at Tiger Safari which is offered here as well. Other interesting rides are Bear and Bison Safari, where they take you in a jeep through the heart of the jungle and try to spot these animals while relating interesting facts about them.

Animals at Hyderabad Zoo

The Hyderabad Zoological Park is famous for the large variety of animals that it holds. These include the likes of primates such as Chimpanzee from Central Africa, Mandrill, Orangatun, Chacma, Olive and yellow baboons, Rhesus, Bonnet, Monkeys, Golden and common langurs as well are housed in the zoo. Big cats found here include African and Indian Lions, Tigers and Panthers. Jackals, Wolves, Hyenas, Bears, Star Tortoises, water Turtles, Estuarine Crocodiles, Monitor Lizards and Chameleons, Indian Cobra, Russels Viper, Giant rock-Python, Tree Snakes etc. are also found here. Elephants, Rhinoceros, Hippopotamus, Zebras, American Bison, Antelopes, Black Buck, Chousingha, Chinkara, Deer, Sambhar, and Brow Antler Deer are the herbivores one can enjoy watching.

How To Reach Nehru Zoological Park

Nehru Zoological park is located near the Mir Alam Tank in the Bahadurpur area which is known by all locals. You can reach the zoo via Lower Tank Bund and take either bus, taxi or a private car.
