Colombo's largest park, a five-minute walk from the National Museum, centres on a seated Buddha statue and musical fountains that run in the evening. A small zoo and playground make it workable for families, though the open lawns get busiest on weekend evenings when locals turn up for picnics and the fountain show.
The Viharamahadevi Park was initially known as Victoria Park and was renamed after the mother of King Dutugemunu. The recent renovations to the Viharamahadevi Park have transformed the structure and have made it into a gem of Colombo. It is a family place, with many families on a picnic in the nearby garden and couples spending quality time in the park. Further, there is also an open stadium which is used for several events and even concerts. There are plenty of food stalls nearby that serve snacks and tasty treats.
