History of Viharamahadevi Park

The Viharamahadevi Park was initially named as the Victoria Park after the Queen Victoria of England as it was built during the reign of the British Colonial Period. The park has a long history which was being used for various purposes since World War II. During World War II it was hosted by the British for the 17th Brigade of the Australian Army. Later on, it was used for matches held between the different countries. One of the most popular games was of the English touring team in the 1930s.

After Sri Lanka got independence from the rule of the British, the name of the park was changed to what it is today, that is Viharamahadevi Park named after the mother of King Dutugemunu. The park was later redone in the year 2013 when it was decided to hold the 23rd Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Colombo. The recent renovation done in 2013 to the Viharamahadevi Park has made it a central attraction of the city today.
