Yangon City Hall History & Significance

The construction of Yangon City Hall began in the former site of the Rippon Hall in 1926, and it was completed after ten years in 1936. Built by the British, the structure has traditional Burmese architecture combined with the European style, making a unique blend. It was designed by the famous architect of Yangon, U Tin, who is also credited with the design of Central Railway Station. The most notable feature includes Pyatthat, the traditional tiered roofs.

The city hall has been the venue for many political protests and demonstrations. It was also bombed several times in the last few years by protesting groups. As such, security is usually tight around the hall.
