Yangon Zoological Garden History & Significance

Initially, the animals were conserved jointly with Phayre's Museum during the British rule. The construction of the zoo began in1901 when the British undertook massive projects to build the Royal Lake, Kandawgyi Garden and Victoria Memorial Park and Zoological Gardens, which was the original name. A royal white elephant belonging to the last king of Burma, King Thibaw, was the centre of attraction then.

During WWII, much of the zoo was looted and destroyed. In 1951, after a few years after Burma gained independence, the government changed the name to Rangoon Zoo and expanded in 1962 to construct the museum, aquarium and the parks.

Today there are more than 50 types of classified plants, over 200 species of animals and birds. Most notable are Takin, eld's deer, giant Burmese tortoise, marsh crocodiles, tigers, hornbills, Asian elephants, monkeys, rhinos, and bears.
