Yangon Central railway station History & Significance

Yangon Central railway station was first built in 1877 by the British laying the foundation for the railway system. The first route was between Yangon and Pyay, built in the Victorian style of architecture, bordered by lawns and colonial-style markings on the tracks. 

During WWII in 1943, many sections of the station was destroyed in the attacks. The Burmese government took up the reconstruction in 1954, which was designed by the country's most noted architect U Tin. He introduced the traditional Burmese tiered roofs or Pyatthat, making the station one of the iconic landmarks in the city. It is one of the historical buildings from the colonial era that remains today and is listed on the Yangon City Heritage List.
