Odaiba, Tokyo Overview
Odaiba is an artificial island in Tokyo Bay reached via the Rainbow Bridge or the automated Yurikamome train. Built originally as 1850s coastal defense batteries, it was redeveloped in the 1990s into a shopping and leisure district. Visitors come for waterfront views of the Rainbow Bridge and central Tokyo skyline, malls including Aqua City and DiverCity Tokyo Plaza, a full-scale Unicorn Gundam statue outside DiverCity, the Miraikan science museum, and a replica Statue of Liberty along the promenade.
Odaiba began as gun batteries built in Tokyo Bay in the 1850s to defend Edo from naval threats. After decades as a working seaport, the island was redeveloped in the 1990s as "Tokyo Teleport Town" and relaunched as a tourist and leisure zone. Today it draws visitors for Rainbow Bridge and skyline views from its waterfront promenade, shopping centers such as Aqua City, DiverCity Tokyo Plaza, and Decks Tokyo Beach, a full-scale Unicorn Gundam statue outside DiverCity, the Miraikan science museum, and a replica Statue of Liberty. The island hosted events during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and is reached via the elevated Yurikamome line or the Rinkai Line.
