Hamarikyu Gardens, Tokyo Overview
A feudal lord's duck-hunting estate on Tokyo Bay, now ringed by the Shiodome towers, with seawater ponds that rise and fall with the tide. Three hundred yen, open daily. The part people miss is the teahouse on the pond island, where you can sit with matcha and the skyline behind it. The Sumida river boat from Asakusa lands here, which makes an easy pairing.
Located at the mouth of the river Sumida, the Hamarikyu Gardens feature saltwater ponds that change levels with the tide, and small tea-houses with a beautiful view of the landscapes and the lake. Historically used as a duck-hunting ground and a retreat for the nobles, many of its traditional vestiges can still be found. It is a remarkable place for nature photography, and remains beautiful, come any season, with the plum blossoms in full bloom during February and cherry blossoms in April. There are free English guided tours on Mondays and Saturdays, and English audio guides are available as well.
