Paro to Thimpu

Via Paro - Thimphu Highway and Phuentsholing - Thimphu Highway

The cab would take you on a long yet short drive over 50.4 kilometers. Your driver will take you south of the Paro Airport, along the Pachu River to the river’s confluence at Chuzom. From Chuzom, the road follows through an upstream direction, through the Wangchu River which goes upto the capital city of Thimphu.

Time taken: 1 hour, 16 minutes

Cost: INR 1000/- to 1500/- for a personal cab. This would increase depending on how many kilometers you end up travelling to reach your personalised destination in Thimpu. 

Typical stop joints: There are several restaurants on the way to Thimpu from Paro. The Sinchula Restaurant is one such common stop for many travellers, on a daily basis. The National Museum of Bhutan is another tourist hot spot that you can drop by to visit. 

Road conditions: The road between Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha are easily amongst the best roads in Bhutan. The section you would be travelling on, between the Paro International Airport and the capital of Thimphu, has been renewed for the tourists’ benefit. It is now a two-lane highway, smooth and paved with asphalt. This makes it a safe and easy drive, which is scenic as well. 

Tips:

• Keep an eye on the kilometers you are travelling and ensure the fare you pay is proportional to the initial quotation. 
• Ensure your driver has a license and his vehicle’s paperwork. 
• Cross check any and all travel information with your respective cab agencies for further acknowledgement. 
• Remember to negotiate terms of payment for extra kilometers beforehand itself.
• Keep the permit to Paro/Thimphu handy as there might be checking on the way.

Quick Tip: Keep your identification documents and travel permits handy. There is a normal border security checking routine to go through. The bus will stop at a restaurant on the way, so don’t stress about food! The buses traverse this route every day, so don’t worry about not being able to avail one.
