"Twin city of Hyderabad"

Secunderabad Tourism

Located presently in the Indian state of Telangana, Secunderabad has been called the "Twin city of Hyderabad". The city, located on the northern part of the Deccan Plateau, was established in 1806 by the English as a cantonment after they defeated the Asaf Jahi dynasty. While Hyderabad has still retained the influences of the Nizam's rule in its culture and architecture, Secunderabad has a more English touch to it as it was under the British until 1948.

The city of Secunderabad is divided from Hyderabad by the Hussain Sagar lake, but still forms a part of Hyderabad's Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). One of the largest cantonments in India, Secunderabad enjoys a significant presence of an army as well as airforce personnel. As a cosmopolitan city, it is home to many communities apart from the natives, including many Parsis and Anglo-Indians

Local Culture of Secunderabad

While the city may be called the twin city of Hyderabad, Secunderabad enjoys its own distinct culture, far from Hyderabad. As it was formerly a British cantonment, the city still shows influences of British culture, while also holding onto the magnificence and sophistication of the Nizams. The city has a very laid-back mood to it, but this doesn't mean the people from Secunderabad compromise on their culture. Home to a large number of communities, the people of all castes and religion, celebrate every festival like their own- be it Christmas, Sankranthi, Muharram- every festival is celebrated with the same zeal and enthusiasm. Dance and music also play a prominent role in Secunderabad's culture. People here are very fond of classical music, and dance and no festival concluded without a dance or music performance. Food of Secunderabad sees influences roots from the Mughlai, the Deccan as well as the Hyderabadi cuisine. Some favorite dishes you should try if you're in Secunderabad are Kofta Curry, Hyderabadi Biryani, Dun ka Keema, Raw Banana curry, Phirni and Dil Khush.

History of Secunderabad

Located six miles away from Hyderabad, the city of Secunderabad has enjoyed a very long yet radiant history. Today the city that is known as a prominent hub for IT and trade centres, Secunderabad was once under many prosperous dynasties. After the decline of the Chalukya Empire in the 11th century, the areas under present-day Hyderabad and Secunderabad were then under the Kakatiya dynasty. The Mughal emperor, Ahmad Shah Bahadur was defeated by the Marathas in the year 1754 at Secunderabad. In the 18th century, it came under the Nizam. It is also said modern-day Secunderabad gets its name from Nizam Asaf Shah II, who was defeated by the East India Company and was therefore founded as a British cantonment.
