Blacks Beach, San Diego Overview

Officially a part of the Torrey Pines State Beach, Black’s Beach is the smaller desolated beach located beneath the bluffs of Torrey Pines in La Jolla. The Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve Park runs through this area where hikers can walk 2 miles south from the Torrey Pines State Beach to join here or drive here on the previously private roads. As you drive up here, you’re bound to pass several mansions that have various designs including the Mushroom house, connected to the beach via a funicular.

Popularly known as one of the largest Nude Beaches in the United States, it was one of the first nude beaches in existence in the country back in the 1970s. Non-traditionalists, Southern Californian nudists, and naturists who prefer to dress down or the beach prefer Black’s Beach over the traditional Torrey Pines State Beach down south. However, this applies only to the northern portion of Black’s Beach owned and managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation as the southern portion, jointly owned by the city of San Diego and state park prohibits such practices.  Surfing is also popular among the advanced surfers that visit here, especially during the big winter spells due to the powerful waves.
