Elk Hill Murugan Temple, Ooty Overview

Perched atop the Elk Hill in Ooty, amidst picturesque backdrop and a resplendent setting, Elk Murugan Temple is a revered Hindu temple enshrined by Lord Muruga. Besides the gorgeous landscape and astounding panoramic vistas, the hill also boasts of rich and flourishing wildlife and bounteous nature.

For the same reason, the place is considered ideal for meditation and yoga practices. In addition to the brilliant architecture of the temple, the highlight of the place is a 40 feet tall statue of Lord Muruga constructed in brick and mortar that stands tall outside the enclosures of the temple and attracts pilgrims and devotees from far and wide. In addition to that, the temple premises also have idols of Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva, Goddess Shakthi, Nava Kanika, Navagrahas etc.

Festival at the Elk Murugan Temple

Thaipusam is the main festival celebrated at the temple to honour Lord Murugan. It is held in the Tamil month of Thai (which falls somewhere in between late January and early February). A grand procession is held on the particular day from the Sri Mahamariamman Temple towards the Elk Hill. The devotees and the pilgrims follow the procession with large containers containing milk as an offering. Some devotees also carry a carriers decorated with flowers and peacock feathers, called ‘kavadi’ on their back which also has milk offerings. There is also a dance form called Kavadi Attam performed at the event.

How to Reach

The temple is located at a short distance from the Ooty Bus Stand. You can either get to the temple in a jeep or an autos available at the Ooty ATC bus stand.
