Castell de Bellver, Majorca Overview

Built for King Jaume II of Majorca in the 14th century, the Bellver castle is a gothic masterpiece located on a hill 3m northwest of Palma de Mallorca. It was the King's residence at first, then a military prison, and now is under civilian control and a major tourist attraction on the island.

A 14th century circular castle, the Castell de Bellver is located on a wooded hillside. With a tall round tower, it is the only one like this in entire Spain. It has been built almost 700 years ago by Pere Salva, the architect of the Almudaina Palace. There are three large towers that surround the central courtyard which is connected by an arch. The courtyard has two levels. The ground floor has semi-circular arches along with flat roof and the upper level has Gothic arches with rib vaulting. The ground floor houses the City history museum that consists of a good collection of pottery and explanatory panels. The Sunday after Easter Sunday is celebrated as Diumenge de l'Angel by the citizens.
