The old name is said to be Kou, a district roughly encompassing the area from Nuuanu Avenue to Alakea Street and from Hotel Street to Queen Street which is the heart of the present downtown district. Honolulu is the most remote city of its size in the world and is both the westernmost and the southernmost major U.S. city.

All major cards are accepted in Honolulu. This city is the most expensive city of Oahu, and thus is suggested to carry as many credit cards as you can. Though there are many ATM machines around the city, the transaction fee is very high for each international transaction. Credit cards are used majorily for even the smallest thing purchased.

Untill 2015, Honolulu was ranked high on world livability rankings, and was also ranked as the 2nd safest city in the U.S.

English is the main language of Honolulu. Locals have become multilingual because of the huge number of tourists coming in the city. Though, the language of Hawaii is Hawaiian Pidgin.

When visiting a home, it is considered good manners to bring a small gift for one's host, the shoes should be removed before entering the house. It is considered gracious to take the plate, or make a small plate, even if you don't intend to eat it. It is also considered thoughtful to bring back gifts from a trip for friends and family. It is rude to refer to the locals as "natives" or "Hawaiians". Only ethnically Native Hawaiians should be called "Hawaiians."
