Luon Cave (Hang Luon), Halong Bay Overview
Luon Cave (Hang Luon) is a water-level sea cave on Bo Hon Island in Halong Bay, reachable only by kayak or small bamboo boat at low tide. The tunnel runs roughly 50 meters through limestone rock, its ceiling hung with stalactites, before opening into an enclosed tidal lagoon surrounded by sheer cliffs. It is one of the most frequently recommended kayaking stops in the bay, typically paired with a visit to nearby Sung Sot Cave on day and overnight cruise itineraries. Monkeys are sometimes spotted on the rocks near the entrance.
Luon Cave sits within Bo Hon Island's limestone karst, a short tender ride from the main cruising channel of Halong Bay. Visitors transfer into kayaks or small rowing boats to pass through its low, dark tunnel, ducking where the ceiling drops close to the water, before emerging into a still, cliff-ringed lagoon largely closed off from the open bay. The formation is classified as a marine notch cave, shaped by tidal erosion and dissolution over time, with a large stalactite marking an earlier, higher water level. It is included on most Halong Bay day-cruise, overnight-cruise, and dedicated kayaking itineraries, usually alongside Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave.
