History of Dawei

Dawei was founded in the 9th century, but there was an ancient city called Sagara close to Dawei, which was the centre of the culture of the Pyu kingdom. Dawei flourished with other major cities during the Pagan dynasty later from the 10th to 13th centuries. But it also faced a lot of aggression leading to many wars with the neighbouring Siamese kingdom, who tried to conquer Dawei to seize the strategically located significant seaport.

The city briefly fell into the hands of the Siamese in the early 18th century, but Burma recovered in 1764. Later after the British annexation of Burma, it developed rapidly as a centre for sea trade as well as a destination for a beach holiday.
