Robben Island, Cape Town Overview

Robben Island, often remembered as the place of banishment, is roughly two kilometres away from Cape town. It is this place where the social outcasts were forcefully sent by the rulers during the Apartheid times.

Holding a great significance for every African, this island is well known for the institutional discrimination, brutality and cruelty when Apartheid was prevalent. It is this place where the freedom fighters spent their entire lives in the prison struggling for the freedom of their country. Apart from just being used as a prison, the island was also a training and a defence ground in the World War II. With the deep history, it was decided to establish Robben Island as a great museum, which would also be a tourist landmark. Visitors come here to get educated about the difficult times and how the freedom fighter overcame them all.
