One can easily reach Cancun via air, bus or ferry. However, there are no rail connections.
There are flights available to Cancun from New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Kolkata via carriers such as British Airways, Air France, Etihad, Lufthansa, Air Canada and Emirates. However, there are no direct flights available from India to Cancun, so one can choose between one stop and two stops flight.
Cancun is served by the Cancun International airport which is well connected to America, Asia and Europe with all major carriers offering services to the city. The airport is located southwest of the city and reaching the island by air is surely the best way to witness its beauty. For your convenience, it is advised to make arrangements for transport beforehand from the airport to your destination.
Car rentals are quite expensive and people generally prefer reaching Cancun by air or bus instead of driving as it gets really tough and many of them have recommended not to drive during night. Some of the major highway routes to Cancun are the Mexico 180 and Mexico 307.
There are no rail connections to Cancun.
Cancun's bus station is located at Calle Pino and there are numerous bus companies that operate first class and second class buses to and fro from Cancun to nearby cities located in the Mexican states of Yucatan, Quintana Roo and Campeche to name a few.
There are ferry services which operate from Isla Mujeres to Puerto Juarez in Cancun, whereas one can also reach Cancun via passenger ships which run regularly from South America and USA.
Getting around Cancun is no trouble with options rnging from a public bus and taxis to rented car. Buses are fairly cheap and is the preferred form of transportation, drivers are helpful and will stop where you ask them to. The main buses that run in Hotel Zone area are R1 and R2 costing about MXN 10.5 per ride. Taxis are easily available, however they are not metered so taxis can be quite expensive in the hotel zone area and considerably cheap in the downtown area. It is advised to discuss the fare in advance before boarding and prefer paying in Pesos. Rented cars are good option if you want to explore a lot in a short duration, but make sure that the car given to you is in appropriate condition as tourists easily become targets of the traffic police.
