Democracy Monument, Bangkok Overview

The Democracy Monument in Bangkok is a historic landmark located on the Ratchadamnoen Avenue’s traffic circle, at the intersection of the Dinso Road. The Monument is symbolic of the convolutions in modern Thai history, a marker for generations of civilians to remember the Siamese Revolution of 1932. Located in the busiest part of Bangkok, the Democracy Monument is a visual treat for everyone.

The monumental edifice represents the new ‘Westernized Bangkok’, making , as one government official puts it, “Ratchadamnoen the Champs-Élysées and the Democracy Monument the Arc de Triomphe of Bangkok”. Its dynamic symbolism, exquisite architecture and critical location, due to its connectivity with major attractions in the capital city, imply that Democracy Monument must be included in your travel itineraries!

Architecture and Design of Democracy Monument

The monument centrepiece is representative of the first Constitution, which is guarded by four wing-like structure. These structures are also symbolic in nature, representing the four armed wings of the government - army, navy, air force and police - which were instrumental in the success of the 1932 coup. The six gates of the centrepiece represent the six ideals of the Phibungsongkhram government: independence, internal peace, equality, freedom, economy, and education. Feroci’s relief sculptures are also politically symbolic in nature. They represent the armed forces as the symbol of Thai people and democracy. Another notable part of the design of Democracy Monument is the panel ‘Personification of Balance and Good Life’, which is a metaphorical representation of the social and political ideals of the military regime. Feroci’s European influence is visible with the depiction of ‘sport’, a naked man playing shot put.
