Howrah Bridge (Neil Island), Andaman Overview

The Howrah Bridge or the Natural Bridge is a bridge-like formation located in the famous ‘vegetable bowl’ of Andaman or Neil Island. This small but beautiful island can be found approximately 40 kilometres south of the Andaman and is widely known for its beaches named after mythical creatures of the epic, Ramayana – the Sitapur, Bharatpur, Ramnagar and Laxmanpur beaches. The Howrah Bridge is situated in the Laxmanpur beach of Neil Island and is extremely popular among tourists. It is a must-see for any nature lover.

Formation of the Bridge

The Howrah Bridge is formed out of two natural corals in the shape of a bridge, jutting out from a wall with a giant hole in the middle. It was popularly referred to as the Rabindra Sethu in the past but was later termed the Howrah Bridge by the local Bengalis of Neil Island (referring to the Howrah Bridge of Kolkata).

Things to Do

Besides the breathtaking views, the Howrah Bridge is surrounded by a variety of wild greenery, natural rock formations and sea creatures. One can view the types of corals and marine life all around, including crabs, starfish, frog, leeches and more!

A guided tour of the area for an extra fee is highly recommended. With the help of the guide, visitors can find out more about the history of the bridge and the sea creatures all around. You may even have a chance to hold some of the fish that can survive outside the water.

One will have to walk for approximately 1 kilometre along a rocky path to reach the bridge and is also bound to encounter some dead coral reef and fishes on the way. Visitors can also enjoy some refreshments along the walking path, such as sugarcane juice and lime soda. You can also find several shops selling food, t-shirts and souvenirs along the beach.

How to Reach

It is possible to get here by road using a car or an auto in Neil Island. If you are travelling by air, the nearest airport is the Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair. Neil Island is 30 minutes away from here.
One can also get here by ferry rides from Havelock or Port Blair.

Tips for Travellers

Keep in mind that the journey to the bridge involves a considerable amount of walking, so be prepared with appropriate footwear. It is not recommended for elders and very young children.
Before your visit, find out about the tides, as the bridge is most visible and accessible at low tide.
The beach is not appropriate for swimming.
It is advisable not to visit during monsoon season, due to the possibility of strong waves and heavy rainfall.
