Timang Beach, Yogyakarta Overview

An oddly-laid out beach at Yogyakarta, the Timang Beach is quite unique. It is at a boundary between the sea and the land which is located in Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It guarantees beautiful sunset views, a gondola ride to the cliff on the other side of the beach with large waves reaching out to you, and a delicious lobster meal. The sand at the beach is white. The Pandanus plants are lined up encompassing the beach which adds to the beautiful picturesque view of Timang Beach.

Timang Beach is not the kind of beach meant for strolling along the seashore and dipping your feet in the ocean water or even swimming in the sea, for that matter. The waters at the beach are rich in lobsters. The waves are so strong that it is very difficult to go rowing. Smart fishermen thus came up with an idea of building a gondola by hand. They then started using their fishing nets to capture the lobsters.

Gondola Rides and Price

Timang Beach provides something beaches don’t normally provide. Here, you can ride a cable car, also known as a Gondola which will lead you to cross the large rock that is in the sea. When you enter Timang Beach, the first thing that you will see is a warung built of rattan and bamboo. A small, painted sign points to a path that goes around a hill to the Gondola. It is only a short walk on the bumpy stones to reach the Gondola. The Gondola that links the mainland is made out of wood, blue ropes, wood washed up on the beach and metal pulleys. The Gondola is thus not a modern one but made of simple materials.

The workers who manage the Gondola are organized and it is relatively safe. They work in teams on the pulleys that send people over to the island. The workers that run the pulleys have walkie-talkies. It takes around Rp 200,000 per person to take the Gondola across the sea. Sliding from the Gondola is about 50 -100 m west of Timang Beach.
